Questioning - The Final Frontier
In 1976, I realized I was on a spiritual path and was keen to get to know me, the real me and to boldly go where I had not gone before in a hurry - within me. Back then, I lived my life by "committee." Whenever issues arose, I sought advice from nearly everyone—family, friends, pseudo-mentors, ministers, acquaintances, and even strangers.
Despite all this input, I often felt lost—literally and figuratively. I was unsure of my purpose in life, what I believed in, and why. My confidence was minimal, as was my happiness and joy. The advice I received was varied and often conflicting. This external search for answers rarely yielded anything meaningful or tailored to my needs.
Then came an "aha moment." It struck me that the guidance I was receiving wasn’t customized for me—it wasn’t aligned with my unique journey. Instead of clarity, I felt overwhelmed by the contrasting opinions. As Australian comedian Tim Minchin humorously noted: "Opinions are like arseholes; everyone has one. But unlike arseholes, opinions should be constantly and thoroughly examined."
After laughing uncontrollably at that quote, I realized its deeper wisdom: we must question our beliefs and their origins. My friends Bil and Cher Holton put it another way: we need to question unquestioned answers rather than just answered questions.
Like many others today, I’ve embraced the practice of questioning entrenched beliefs and perspectives - a healthy habit that often reveals remnants of childhood conditioning. As children (and sometimes as adults), we tend to accept what authority figures present as absolute truth, filing it away under "factual" without scrutiny.
Over the years, this questioning process has helped me uncover outdated dogmas, misinformation, and false narratives stored within me. By examining whether these beliefs resonate with my intuition and inner guidance, I’ve been able to release them—with love—and make space for authentic understanding.
So I offer questioning as a useful tool for personal development, ease and ultimately freedom. To go inside ourselves for answers, trusting our intuition (you could say this is inner-tuition?). You are your own Wikipedia, Google and Encyclopaedia, which sits in your own Cosmic Cloud. Go for it, it works!
